This week rewarded with Homes & Gardens Designer Awards, and their new category Designer Collaboration for 2012 was well worth celebrating. What transpired was a stainless steel design for a garlic crusher that uses a simple rocking motion to force pieces up through a mesh of holes and then holds them in a shallow bowl.
The award winning innovation comes from a collaboration between design duo Edward Goodwin and Richard Hartshorn, of Goodwin Hartshorn, with contemporary kitchenware and stylish kitchen product retailer Joseph Joseph. The new award aims to recognise companies and designers who successfully work together. Of working together the designers say, “Of course we pool abilities, but we also encourage each other, which maintains momentum.”
So what inspires these artists? “We identify problems then try to turn the solutions into products. It’s important to get out of the studio – we sketched the Garlic Rocker on the tube travelling back from the V&A.”
